Plea to give more thrust to agro-chemical industries in TN

Our Bureau

Chennai , May 17

The Chemical Industries Association has asked the Tamil Nadu Government to ensure that one of the mega chemical industrial estates planned by the Union Chemicals and Fertilisers Ministry is set up in the State.

In a letter to the Chief Minister, Mr M. Karunanidhi, the association urged the Government to introduce value-added tax at the earliest.

It also wanted the Government to give greater thrust to agro-chemical industries and in particular to molasses-based alcohol for industrial purposes and as alternate fuel. It wanted a State petroleum and natural gas prospecting and infrastructure corporation to be created, on the lines of the ones in Gujarat and Andhra Pradesh.

It suggested removal of constraints on the procurement and transfer of industrial raw materials like methanol.

The association's President, Mr P.K.N. Panicker, also called for a planned restructuring of major cities in the State, including Chennai, keeping in view the need for environment management, service needs of the residents, and rehabilitation and encouragement of tiny sector manufacturing activities located within city limits.
