Roadways States - Other States Bengal truck operators' body to join strike Our Bureau
Kolkata , May 18 The members of the Federation of West Bengal Truck Operators' Associations will join the nationwide truck strike from June 1, as called by the All India Confederation of Goods Vehicle Owners' Association (ACOGOA) in support of several demands. In a statement issued here on Thursday, the federation General Secretary, Mr Satyajit Majumder, listed the demands which included an end to high-handedness of insurance companies in settlement of cases related to mandatory third party motor insurance and to extortion by law and order authorities in a few states including West Bengal, immediate implementation of Supreme Court order banning overloading, introduction of consignment tax in place of the present toll charges on National Highways and State Highways and removal of anomalies in regard to deduction of tax at source by the transporters.
Plea to CM
Meanwhile, Mr Chittaranjan Dass, Vice President of ACOGOA, has appealed to the West Bengal Chief Minister, Mr Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee, to immediately initiate steps to stop arbitrary collection of fines from trucks passing through West Bengal. "Such a collection is irrational and untenable as the money so collected is unofficial and therefore rarely reaches the state coffers", Mr Dass said, adding, "it only adds to the harassment of the vehicle operators and pushes up the cost of operation".
