Tea Chest lifters' stir hits tea trade P.S. Sundar
Coonoor , May 23 Teas from Nilgiris meant for the Coonoor Tea Trade Association's (CTTA) auctions are now being transported to Coimbatore warehouses to prevent the blockade in the movement to upcountry markets and the shipyards following the strike by tea chest lifters here from May 11.
Downloading too hit
Initially, the uploading from the warehouses in Coonoor was affected, but since last week, even the downloading into the warehouses from the factories has been hit. Besides, the warehouse keepers are complaining of shortage of space with the teas remaining unmoved for long. . To overcome all these difficulties, now, factories are sending their teas to the warehouses in Coimbatore, but these teas would be auctioned in Coonoor as usual. This follows a decision taken by the CTTA to face the situation. A statement issued by the Tea Chest Lifters' Union here said that the negotiations between its representatives and the representatives of the transport owners' body on May 19 failed. The negotiations were on the revision of the wages to be paid to the tea chest lifters as the three-year agreement expired on March 30.
