Mobile revelation

A case filed by a disgruntled mobile phone subscriber before the Monopolies and Restrictive Trade Practices Commission reveals the how far the country has travelled on the cell phone route. The complaint filed before the commission states that in 1995 the person had paid Rs 4,200 as activation charges, Rs 3,000 as refundable security and a whopping Rs 20,000 for a Nokia 2110 handset, which included lease rent for three years.

Contrast this with getting a mobile connection these days and the reasons for the exploding mobile subscriber base are clear.

Incidentally, the complainant, who had alleged inferior service by the cell operator, received justice this month, that is, after 10 years, though the Rs 5 lakh compensation he had sought was reduced to Rs 5,000 by the Commission.
