Higher seed subsidy lures 9 lakh farmers in Karnataka

Our Bureau

Bangalore , May 25

The Karnataka Government's decision to increase subsidy on seeds for small and marginal farmers has so far attracted nine lakh members who have registered with the Raitha Samparka Kendras (farmers' contact centres) for availing the facility during the current kharif season.

The seed subsidy has been raised to 75 per cent from last year's 50 per cent. Under the scheme, the Government would be distributing 3.59 lakh quintals of seeds for 13 crops, including paddy, jowar, wheat, redgram, blackgram, maize, groundnut, cotton and soyabean. The scheme would cost the Government Rs 75 crore.

Distribution

The Minister for Agriculture, Mr Bandeppa Kashempur, had recently announced the increase in subsidy. Under the scheme, companies under franchise arrangement would be authorised to distribute seeds to eligible farmers against coupons issued by the government. The scheme envisages that the small and marginal farmers with a land holding up to five acres would have to get registered with the Raitha Samparka Kendras by paying Re 1 as subscription. To avoid bogus registration, the farmers should have a valid document like identity cards issued by the Election Commission or ration card.

The scheme, along with other facilities, is expected to help farmers enhance productivity. The State has fixed a production target of 115 lakh tonnes of foodgrains for the coming kharif season sowing for which is expected to start by next month.
