Maharashtra steps to prevent flood
Our Bureau
Mumbai, May 25
To prevent a repeat of the July 26, 2005 floods in Mumbai, the Maharashtra Chief Minister, Mr Vilasrao Deshmukh, announced a series of disaster management measures on Thursday. For the first time, all major nullahs in suburban Mumbai, which carry storm water to the sea, are being scraped clean right to the sediment floor. About 75 per cent of the nullahs had been cleaned and the remaining likely to be completed before June 5, arelease said. The State Government would also monitor the water level in all inter-state irrigation projects. Last year, large areas in Maharashtra were inundated due to delay in opening the gates of the Almatti dam in Karnataka. Automatic rain gauges are being installed in 26 locations across the city. Moreover, from June 1, a control room is being set up in all the municipal wards. Each ward office will also be armed with two JCB and two dumpers, according to the release.
The State Government is also taking the help of NGO and other voluntary organisations to prepare for any calamity.
