Our Bureau

Mumbai, May 25

Hindalco Industries Ltd has deferred the planned shutdown of a copper smelter at Dahej in Gujarat as it was found in good condition. The non-ferrous metals major had planned to shut down the smelter from May 15 for routine maintenance.

Another smelter at Dahej would be restarted on June 1 after maintenance, Mr D. Bhattacharya, Managing Director, Hindalco, said at a news conference after announcing that the company had entered into an MoU with the Madhya Pradesh Government for its 3.25-lakh tonne greenfield aluminium smelter.

The company, which is setting up this smelter with an investment of Rs 7,700 crore, would likely double its capacity at a later stage at a cost of Rs 10,200 crore.
