New Delhi , May 25 The Centre has asked NTPC Ltd to expedite procurement of natural gas to run its gas-based stations and has called for a staggered implementation of the maintenance schedules of its plants in view of the prevailing power shortage situation. Speaking at a seminar here today, the Power Secretary, Mr R.V. Shahi, said the country has a total gas-based capacity of about 12,000 MW, of which about 3,500 MW is not being utilised on account of gas shortage. He said the country would have to remain dependent to a large extent on coal for a long time, in view of the uncertainty in supply and prices of gas and liquid fuel.
Goa proposal
The Power Minister, Mr Sushil Kumar Shinde, said Goa has approached the Centre with plans to set up an ultra mega power project. He said the Ministry has told the State Government that its demand would be considered and the project would be given a go-ahead only if it meets all the parameters. The Goa project, if approved, would be operated on imported coal, he said.
Mega projects
The coal-fired ultra mega power projects, each with a generation capacity of 4,000 MW at least and requiring an investment of Rs 16,000 crore, were initially proposed to be set up in five States Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Gujarat, Maharashtra and Karnataka. Two more States Orissa and Andhra Pradesh were subsequently added to the list earlier this year.
