`Attract CTV facility in Nanguneri park'

Chennai, May 25

The Information Technology Ministry would recommend to the Tamil Nadu Government to attract a television set assembling facility at the Nanguneri High Tech Industrial Park near Tirunelveli, according to the Union Minister for IT, Mr Dayanidhi Maran.

The State Government has a proposal to distribute colour TVs to the poor. A local assembling facility would help to bring down the cost of colour televisions to less than Rs 2,000, he said. This would prove a 2-in-1 solution — it would help to revive the high tech project at Nanguneri and help the Government in its programme, he said. It may be recalled that the Hi-Tech Industrial Park in Nanguneri, Tirunelveli, initiated by the then DMK Government in 2001 was to be promoted by the Tamil Nadu Industrial Development Corporation in association with the INFAC group and Axes Technologies Inc USA, at an estimated cost of Rs 700 crore. Over 2,094 acres land had been acquired and the Centre had "in principle" recognised the park as a Special Economic Zone.
