Jadhav given temporary charge as JNPT Chief

Eight of the 12 major ports are without Board of Trustees

Mumbai , June 1

Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust (JNPT), which handles about 60 per cent of the country's container traffic, is without a full-fledged chairman.

Even though Mr Ravi Budhiraja's term as Chairman of JNPT ended on May 31, the Government is yet to appoint his successor.

Ms Rani A. Jadhav, Chairperson of the neighbouring Mumbai port, has been asked to hold temporary charge as JNPT's Chairman.

Setback seen

The absence of a full-fledged chairman may deliver a setback to the port's efforts to de-congest the three container terminals, especially with the onset of monsoon.

In May, the port once again faced a severe congestion problem and it had initiated steps to de-congest before the monsoon sets in, as heavy rains are likely to further slowdown cargo evacuation.

What is more, JNPT has been without a deputy chairman for the last few months. Port users are surprised that the Government has failed to appoint a full-fledged chairman and deputy chairman of the port, especially at a time when the port is going through a major expansion programme to meet the growing needs of India's container trade.

Board of Trustees

In fact, eight of the 12 major ports in the country are functioning without a Board of Trustees, which plays a significant role in the implementation of the expansion and modernisation schemes of the respective ports.

After the term of the eight boards expired in April, the new boards have so far not been fully constituted.

The ports that do not have full-fledged boards are Mumbai, Chennai, Paradip, Mormugao, Kandla, Cochin, Kolkata and Visakhapatnam.

Reports indicate that of these only the Vizag port is close to having its new board in place.
