Letters IT staff shortage
The Nasscom president, Mr Kiran Karnik, has cautioned IT companies that they could face a talent shortage of about five lakh by 2010. If this forecast is correct, the academicians need to take corrective action. Apart from increasing the number of available seats in IT-related subjects, universities should plan shorter-duration courses, specifically oriented towards the needs of the industry. Polytechnic colleges could be upgraded to award Bachelor's degrees in IT-related subjects. Even Arts and Science colleges could add IT courses. But how long will the demand last? Should there be a lull, unemployment and underemployment in the IT field could lead to a lot of despair among aspiring students. It would be advisable to acquire additional capabilities for a successful carrier. V. S. Venkatavaradan Salem
