Hoping for demand

QUALITY MATTERS: A worker checking the quality of pepper at a godown near Kochi. Pepper exports increased to 16,700 tonnes worth Rs 140.50 crore last fiscal from 14,150 tonnes valued at Rs 121.40 crore the previous year. Currently, export prices are ruling at $1,600-50 a tonne on hopes of orders from abroad, though futures are showing a tendency to decline.
