Petroleum Government - Politics Left demands rollback in fuel price hike Our Bureau
New Delhi , June 13 A day after the senior BJP leaders including Mr Atal Bihari Vajpayee and Mr L.K. Advani courted arrest to protest against the fuel price hike, the Left parties and the trade unions today took to the streets and courted arrest demanding a complete rollback in the hike in prices of diesel and petrol.Launching a nationwide agitation, the Left leaders said the UPA Government cannot take their support for granted. However, they also said the stir was not a threat to the stability of the two-year-old Government which was established to keep away the "communal forces."
Court arrest
The CPI (M) General Secretary, Mr Prakash Karat, and polit bureau member, Mr Sitaram Yechury, the CPI General Secretary, Mr A.B. Bardhan, the RSP General Secretary, Mr Abani Roy, and Forward Bloc leaders, Mr Debabrata Biswas and Mr G. Devarajan, were among the leaders who courted arrests along with others from the Samajwadi Party, Rashtriya Lok Dal and Janata Dal (S), who also supported the agitation. The Left leaders said that the issue will also come up during the UPA-Left Coordination Committee meet scheduled for June 15 and added that it was highly deplorable that the Government had chosen to hike the prices of petrol and diesel by brushing aside their alternative suggestions to reduce the tax component in the customs, excise duties and other taxes on fuel imports. The Left-affiliated trade unions such as the CITU, AITUC and others participated in the agitation.
