The Hindu Business Line : Plea to set up kiosks in farmers' shandy

To spread awareness among consumers and also provide market linkages, the Tamil Nadu Government should set up kiosks within the farmers' shandy that can sell `organically' raised vegetables, according to Mr Vyapuri, President of the United Farmers Forum.

Mr Vyapuri has said excess application of chemical fertilisers and pesticides is being traced to many of the illness afflicting the consumers of vegetables and fruits due to presence of their residues in human systems. The spread of viral infection and the prevalence of mosquitoes are also described as the avoidable side-effects of excessive usage of chemical fertilisers that helps the flies and insects harmful to human beings develop resistance.

The farmer leader said that focussed encouragement be given to growing organic crops by promoting `model' organic vegetable farms at every block/village under the public-private partnership basis.

This is necessary because the farmers who will be interested in taking up organic cultivation need to be educated on the standardised practices in undertaking `organic' farming as a commercial venture.
