The total import of sensitive items for the fiscal year April-March 2006 declined by 12.55 per cent to touch Rs 16,469 crore as against Rs 18,832 crore recorded in the previous year.
Imports of edible oil have decreased from Rs 11,066 crore in 2004-05 to Rs 8,710 crore in fiscal 2005-06. A significant feature of edible oil import is the increase in crude oil import by 21.7 per cent and decrease in refined oil import by 77.8 per cent. An official release said that the decline in edible oil import was mainly due to huge shortfall in import of RBD palmolein, which has gone down by 73 per cent and `other refined palm oil' which has dropped by 81 per cent.
The gross import of all commodities in fiscal 2005-06 stood at Rs 6,20,827 crore as compared to Rs 4,78,302 crore in the previous year. Thus import of sensitive items constituted 3.9 per cent and 2.7 per cent of the gross imports during 2004-05 and 2005-06 respectively.
For the period under review, imports of edible oil, cotton and silk, milk and milk products and rubber have shown a decline at broad group level. Imports of fruits and vegetables (including nuts), spices, automobiles, tea and coffee, alcoholic beverages and products of SSIs have shown increase during fiscal 2005-06.
