Railways Concor mulls train service to Pakistan Our Bureau
Chennai , June 23 Container Corporation of India (Concor) is exploring the possibility of starting a container train service to Pakistan. With bilateral relations between India and Pakistan improving, such a service would immensely help the trade in both countries, according to a source.
COMMODITIES
Currently, commodities such as onion and potato move in a large quantity from India to Pakistan. However, for a 100-km stretch from Ludhiana in India to a nearby city in Pakistan, the commodity needs to travel more than 3,000 km.
Cargo route
The cargo first goes to Ludhiana inland container depot to get let export clearance. From Ludhiana, the cargo travels to Mumbai, Dubai, Karachi and finally through road to the final destination, the source said. Concor, in association with Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd, will commence its international air cargo terminal at Nashik in Maharashtra. The terminal has a runway length of 3.1 km, and used to handle large Defence aircraft. There is a huge potential in handling air cargo at Nashik, which could attract cargo from Pune and Mumbai. Daily 80-100 tonnes of fruits and vegetables is exported from Nashik to various countries, the source said
