Sharad Yadav questions clearance to Goyal

Wants intelligence agencies report made public

New Delhi , June 23

With the Government giving security clearance to Jet Airways Chairman, Mr Naresh Goyal, to be inducted on the board of Air Sahara, the former Civil Aviation Minister, Mr Sharad Yadav, has fired another salvo questioning the manner in which the clearance was granted.

The security clearance to Mr Goyal came through late on Thursday well after the deadline for the finalisation of the share purchase agreement (SPA) for Jet Airways to buy out Air Sahara lapsed. While there has been no official word from Jet Airways, it was said to be the delay in getting security clearance for Mr Goyal that promoted the airline to let the SPA to lapse.

In mid-May, the Government granted security clearance to Mr Saroj Datta, Mr Victoriano P. Dungca, Mr Javed Akhtar and Dr Vijay Kelkar to join the Air Sahara board.

At that time the Home Ministry said that the security clearance of Mr Goyal would be furnished "separately."

Sources said that the inquiry on Mr Goyal was conducted after a reference was received from the Ministry of Civil Aviation earlier this year. This is the second time that Mr Goyal has been security cleared by the Government.

Calling for making public the confidential report of the intelligence agencies on Mr Goyal and Jet Airways, Mr Yadav has said that it was unfortunate that the Ministry of Home Affairs gavesecurity clearance to Mr Goyal.

"I demand that a case be filed on the basis of the current information and Mr Goyal should be further investigated about the dubious links as reported by the intelligence agencies during the rule of the National Democratic Alliance Government," he said.

Questioning the timing of the security clearance to Mr Goyal, the former Minister pointed out that despite being undecided about granting the clearance on June 21, the Government cleared it 24 hours later.
