Telecommunications States - Tamil Nadu Airtel plans new initiatives for TN Our Correspondent
Madurai , June 28 Airtel plans to increase the pace of its mobile network expansion in the State by the end of March 2007. The `cell sites' will be scaled up to over 4,500 from 2,400 at the end of March, covering about 800 towns and 15,000 villages in the State, said the Chief Executive Officer (Mobility), Bharti Airtel Ltd - Tamil Nadu, Mr P. Swaminathan, while announcing the new network expansion plans here on Wednesday. Additional towers would help optimise operations and ensure trouble-free and quality service. In Madurai alone, the tower strength would be doubled from 50 and in the next one month, the focus would be on fine-tuning the quality, he said. It plans to raise the capacity per second to 4,800 messages, he said. Another initiative is the launch of `South Roaming' at a special price of Rs 2/minute in Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka and Kerala against the current rate of Rs 2.89-3.99/minute for all outgoing and incoming calls, while roaming within Airtel networks in these states applicable to both existing and new Airtel customers.
SMS in Tamil
To penetrate smaller towns and villages, a Tamil voice portal and Tamil SMS have been launched. The voice portal includes a number of attractive features such as like ringtones, greetings, Thirukkural, kavithai arangam, tips for women etc It would enable customers to send messages in Tamil.
