Policy Agri-Biz & Commodities - Cultivation States - Kerala New law to prevent filling of paddy fields in Kerala Our Bureau
The Government is considering a scheme to prevent reclamation of paddy fields and extend subsidy and incentives to farmers.
Thiruvananthapuram , June 28 The Kerala Government is planning to introduce a new legislation banning filling of paddy fields in order to protect paddy cultivation. The Revenue Minister, Mr K.P. Rajendran, said in the State Assembly on Wednesday that the existing law in this respect is inadequate, necessitating the framing of a new legislation. The Bill in this regard would be introduced in the next session of the Assembly. The Minister said the Government is also considering a scheme to prevent reclamation of paddy fields and extend subsidy and incentives to farmers. He said that group farming would be taken up in 1.2 lakh hectares in Pathanamthitta, Alappuzha, Palakkad and Malappuram districts. The Government would give a financial assistance of Rs 1,000 per hectare, he added.
2 more lotteries
The Finance Minister, Mr Thomas Isaac, informed the House that two more lotteries would be launched in the State soon. The Lottery Department would be computerised and steps would be taken to streamline sale of tickets, announcement of results and distribution of prizes. The Minister for Home and Tourism, Mr Kodiyeri Balakrishnan, said that 39 cases of inter-State vehicle thefts have been registered. There is, however, no need to constitute a special team to prevent such thefts, he said. The Minister said Thiruvananthapuram, Ernakulam and Kozhikode have been identified for developing health tourism in view of the healthcare facilities available in these cities. Besides, tourist aid posts are being set up at Kovalam and Kumarakom. Administrative sanction has been given for setting up aid posts at Veli, Varkala, Ponmudi, Munnar and Thekkady. He said the Government is considering ordering an inquiry into the kidney racket case in Kozhikode. Also under consideration is a proposal to withdraw the cases against public workers registered by the previous government in connection with mass agitations.
