Concern over rising salaries for IT freshers

Our Bureau

Bangalore , June 28

While the major IT companies have been debating problems of high-volume recruitment, there is a bigger challenge that's emerging — rising salaries of freshers. At an industry-academia interface organised by Campus Connect, a division of CareerNet Consulting, an organisation that helps companies collaborate with campuses on various platforms, HR managers and placement officers of tech schools from across the country agreed that salary inflation is an area that needs to be addressed immediately.

Prof Vinod Tare of IIT Kanpur, felt that corporates were using `salary hikes' to get themselves visible slots during campus recruitments. "Unfortunately, these days, pay packets are the only criteria for a student joining an organisation," he said.

Corporates, on the other hand, felt that training and placement officers and faculty had a greater role to play during recruitment in terms of advising and counselling students.

"For long-term interface with the academia, you'll have to look beyond placement officers," Mr Rishi Das, CEO, CareerNet, said. Referrals and endorsements from institute alumni are the best source of talent, HR managers felt.

Rambus Inc deploys employees who are alumni from the institute as brand ambassadors for the company and "it is working well," said its HR manager, Mr Uday Menon.
