Mango exports to Japan resume

Our Bureau

Mumbai, June 30

The first export consignment of mangoes to Japan, after 20 years, was sent from Mumbai on Friday. Japan had imposed a ban on import of Indian mangoes in 1986 on the ground of infestation by melon fruit fly and oriental fruit fly. Mr K.S. Money, Chairman, Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (APEDA) and Mr Sakata Hisashi, First Secretary, Embassy of Japan, flagged off of the consignment of mangoes at the international airport. An expert from the Japanese Plant Quarantine Office would supervise the vapour heat treatment for the export consignments for a period of 34 days during the current mango season. Keeping in view the importance of opening up of the Japanese market, APEDA has accepted the condition of inspection of the initial consignments by the Japanese expert.
