NCL bags TERI eco award

Northern Coalfields Ltd (NCL) has bagged TERI Corporate Environmental Award for 2004-05 in recognition of its leadership efforts towards qualitative improvement in environmental management and innovative initiatives among corporates with turnover above Rs 500 crore a year.The award was received by NCL's Chairman & Managing Director, Mr V.K. Singh, recently in Delhi from the President, Mr A.P.J. Abdul Kalam. TERI national award has been instituted by the Indian Institute for Technical Research and Development. NCL was selected for the award by a jury led by former Chief Justice of India, Mr J.S. Verma. A NCL press note has said that the company's total area of vegetation between 2000 and 2005 increased by 2.41 sq.km. which is equivalent to 0.85 per cent of the mining area under its command. Since formation of this company as a wholly owned subsidiary of Coal India Ltd in 1986, forest cover in its operating coalfield (Singrauli) has increased from 40 per cent to 80 per cent. Accordingly, the minimum and maximum annual temperature has dropped by 0.9 degree centigrade and average annual rainfall has increased by 96 mm with an increase in frequency of rains by 11 days.
