Mumbai city was lashed with heavy rains on Monday throwing life in the city out of gear.

Since Saturday morning, there has been intermittent downpours, heavy rains that reminded citizens of the deluge last July 26.

Several low-lying areas of the city, especially suburbs experienced flash floods as a result of unabated rains. Schools in the city and suburbs also recorded low attendance.

Dr K. Sathidevi, Director, Area Cyclone Warning Centre, Regional Meteorological Centre, said that heavy to very heavy rains or showers in the city, with a few showers of extremely heavy downpour in the city and suburbs is forecasted for the next 48 hours.

The rains would also be coupled with strong gusty winds. The present rainfall is due to `trough conditions' on the sea, which is extending from the South coast of Gujarat to the Kerala coast.

The cyclonic circulation over South Gujarat and adjoining areas is also adding to the rainfall, she said.

Rain lines hit

The local service of all the three railway lines remained affected. The Harbour line of Central Railway was suspended following waterlogging at Wadala railway station. Train services of Western as well as Central Railway were also running 25 to 30 minutes behind schedule.

The buses of the Brihanmumbai Electric Supply and Transport were plying on all major routes but they had to re-routed at Nana Chowk, Milan subway, Dadar-Hindmata and Kalachowkie due to waterlogging.

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) Commissioner, Mr Johny Joseph, told presspersons that 85 high capacity pumps were installed in the city for removing floodwaters.

The BMC has also deployed 18 boats and the India Navy has also provided six boats and 20 personnel to meet any eventuality. He said that widening of all major nahllas' and Mithi River has been completed.
