Plans assembly/logistic centre at Chennai to tap southern markets

Pune , July 4

With an investment of € 1 million, Grupo Antolin, the Spanish automotive component manufacturer, has inaugurated its design centre in Pune.

Addressing presspersons, Ms Marie Helena Antolin, member of Grupo Antolin Board, said the € 2-billion company is also setting up an assembly/logistic centre at Chennai.

This plant is expected to be operational in February 2007 and would cater to the southern markets.

"We have decided to go by ourselves in setting up the centre at Chennai,'' she said.

An investment to the tune of € 8 million would be used to tap into the southern markets where automotive players such as Hyundai, Ford and Toyota have a presence.

The company has a joint venture with Krishna Maruti in Gurgaon to cater to the northern markets and supplies overhead system trims. It has a manufacturing set up at Ranjangaon near Pune, which was started in 1996.

The Pune plant, which is a 100 per cent subsidiary, manufactures sunvisors, door panels, package trays and headliners.

The Pune plant has made a turnover of Rs 30 crore for the last fiscal and is estimating a growth of 10 to 15 per cent per annum.

Mr Vilas Unavane, Group Chief Executive Officer, Indian operations, said the new facility would also offer design and engineering services to the automobile and auto component industry.

Grupo Antolin started its product design activities in 2002 with three employees to its rolls in Pune. It has currently about 50 personnel on its rolls and is planning to increase this to 120 by the end of the current fiscal, he said.

Ms Helena added that the company was also looking at making Pune the global hub of design engineering. Currently, it has four design centres in Spain, North America, France and Germany and Pune is the fifth.
