Karnataka Udyog Mitra has cleared investment proposals of 6 companies on 115 acres of land at the EPIP
Mangalore , July 9 Investments in information technology (IT) sector are gaining momentum in Mangalore. Various companies are planning to invest more than Rs 200 crore in IT-related projects in the Export Promotion Industrial Park (EPIP) at Ganjimath in Mangalore taluk. (This investment is in addition to the proposed IT SEZ at Mudipu in Mangalore taluk.) Official sources told Business Line that Karnataka Udyog Mitra (KUM) has cleared investment proposals of six companies on 115 acres of land at the EPIP. KUM is the investment promotion and facilitation agency of the State Government and also the secretariat for the single window agency for grant of approvals and sanction of infrastructure facilities for approved projects. More than 200 acres of land has been earmarked for the development of EPIP in Mangalore.
Investment Proposals
All these six companies are primarily engaged in IT-related activities. Of them, the investment proposals of the five companies are estimated at Rs 201.6 crore. However, one company is yet to reveal its investment estimates. Sources said that three of these companies are planning to set up sector-specific SEZs (special economic zones), and other two are aiming at establishing software development centres at EPIP site. The remaining one is planning to set up a BPO (business process outsourcing) unit there. Each of those three companies planning sector-specific SEZs needs 25 acres of land. Of them, two are planning to invest Rs 43.30 crore and Rs 48 crore in their projects.
Water
Though the Government wants to provide 0.5 MGD of water to EPIP from the nearby Gurpur vented dam, farmers from the area have expressed dissent. Their contention is that water from vented dam is used for irrigation purpose, and it should not be diverted to industrial purpose.
Mr B. Nagaraja Shetty, Dakshina Kannada district in-charge Minister, who conducted a meeting of the officials of the departments concerned and the villagers on Saturday, assured the meeting that the requirements of farmers will be given priority before using the water. The meeting decided to constitute a committee of experts, farmers and officials to find a solution for this issue. The Minister asked the committee to submit the report in 10 days.
