No farmer suicides reported, says Nabard

Anand , July 10

Gujarat is the only major State where no farmers have committed suicide.

The State is witnessing a second green revolution and has recorded 12.6 per cent growth in agriculture in the last two years, said a senior Nabard official.

Addressing a function, Mr Bhanwar Puri, Chief General Manager, said that Gujarat's agricultural production has gone up by 200 per cent during the period and farmers' income too has increased, thus discouraging them to migrate to urban areas in search of livelihood.

Unlike the one per cent growth in agricultural sector in many States, Gujarat has registered the highest growth of 12.6 per cent, which is a record, he added.

He added that Nabard, as a facilitator between the Government, farmers, banks, and NGOs, was aiming at increasing farmers' income by 3-4 times through better co-ordination of these agencies and synergising their resources. With this aim, the bank is also co-ordinating efforts with Gujarat Agriculture University (GAU), Anand in taking its researches from laboratory to land and arranging for farmers to use better seed variety for increased production.

Gujarat has huge potential in the food processing industry as well. For realising this objective, corporate-farmer partnership and contract farming are crucial, said Mr Puri.

The National Commission of Farmers has been impressed with the Gujarat model of agriculture and rural development in which Nabard played a key role in increasing productivity, profitability and availability of credit for raising income, Mr Puri added.

The State Agriculture Minister, Mr Bhupendrasinh Chudasama, who inaugurated Nabard's 19th branch in the State, lauded its efforts in the State's rural and agricultural development and active participation in the Krishi Mahotsava every year.
