Mumbai , July 13 Tata Motors has plans to introduce a new Tatamobile in 2007. It will be based on a new platform with CRDi engine technology as a possible option in the pipeline. TheTatamobile is a pick-up vehicle forming part of the light commercial vehicle range At present, component manufacturers are gearing up for the new launch with certain components being developed specifically for the model. When queried on the current development on the vehicle, Tata Motors' spokesperson said that the company would not like to comment on future product line. The vehicle was formerly launched in 2002; a sports utility truck variant was later introduced in 2005.
The price
According to dealer sources, the double cab pick up is available for Rs 5.21 lakh (on road price, Mumbai) while the single cab is available for Rs 4.84 lakh. In comparison to its nearest competitor, (Mahindra Bolero Camper and the Max Pick-up) the variants are dearer by Rs 30,000 and Rs 18,000 respectively. For commercial use such a price disparity is quite detrimental for overall sales, experts said. In the domestic market, with sales averaging 1,800 units per month, Tata Motors has a market share of 44 per cent while Mahindra & Mahindra is the market leader in this niche segment. Exports have been more fruitful for the pick-up range with an equal number of units (1,800) exported to countries such as South Africa, Turkey, Italy, Spain, Sri Lanka, and the Middle East. The company is now targeting new markets such as Russia, Egypt and North Africa.
