The Hindu Business Line : Kochi port, IGT hold meeting in Bangalore

To discuss and address the various issues and concerns of its users, India Gateway Terminal (IGT) and Cochin Port Trust have jointly held an interactive session in Bangalore.

The session focused on the significant changes that had taken place in terminal operations and work practices over last year at the Rajiv Gandhi Container Terminal. The participants included exporters, importers, Container Corporation of India, clearing agents, steamer agents and freight forwarders.

Mr N. Ramachandran, Chairman, Cochin Port Trust, highlighted the significant proposals on the anvil at the port such as the international container transhipment terminal, LNG terminal, ship repair facility, bunkering terminal and international cruise terminal.

He also gave an overview of the existing facilities at the port, traffic dealt with and the efforts taken by the port to reduce transaction cost to its customers by increasing efficiency and reducing hidden costs.

Mr Suresh Joseph, General Manager, India Gateway Terminal, spoke of the qualitative changes that have been brought about in the Man-Machine-Method equation at the terminal to benefit the trade and shipping fraternity. He also highlighted the introduction of a fixed day train service linking ICD Bangalore with Kochi. With the co-operation of the trade and Container Corporation of India, this connectivity could be further increased to a bi-weekly service immediately.

Mr Elvis D'Cruz, Commercial Manager, India Gateway Terminal, emphasised the importance of the growing Exim business in Bangalore and the need for various agencies such as the shipping lines, freight forwarders, clearing agents and India Gateway Terminal to work together to provide an efficient and cost-effective solution for the customer to choose Kochi as their preferred gateway.

Various efforts taken by IGT like the Green Channel facility at the Walayar check post, traffic management at the terminal, and the one window export documentation centre at Willingdon Island that has resulted in faster clearance of export containers through the port, was appreciated by the trade.

Mr Frank Carter, Terminal Manager, India Gateway Terminal, assured the trade that all efforts would be taken to eliminate bottlenecks in the system and work towards making the container terminal in Kochi customer-friendly.
