Opposition to one-child norm

Our Bureau

Hyderabad, July 15

In a bid to curtail the population growth rate, the Union Government had mooted a proposal to introduce one-child norm. But a few opposition parties and non-governmental organisations had strongly objected to the proposal at a meeting chaired by the Prime Minister, Dr Manmohan Singh, last year. Ms Panabaka Lakshmi, Union Minister of State for Health and Family Welfare, said here recently that the idea was to put a cap on the population growth rate. She, however, refused to name the parties and NGOs that had opposed the proposal. Dr Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy, Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister, said the State still lagged behind with regard to infant mortality rate. This could be improved by improving institutional deliveries. Dr D. Vidyasagar, a global expert in neonatology, said educating mothers was very important in ensuring better family welfare.
