Plea to raise ELS cotton output

Our Bureau

Mumbai, July 15

Although the country harvested a record 244 lakh bales of cotton in 2005-06, there was a big mismatch between demand for and supply of Extra Long Staple (ELS) cotton which needed to be corrected, according to Mr. Kishorilal F. Jhunjhunwala, President of East India Cotton Association (EICA). He was delivering the presidential address at the 84th annual general meeting of the association here last week. While the domestic demand for ELS cotton is estimated at 8-9 lakh bales, indigenous output is about 4 lakh bales (comprising varieties such as DCH-32 and MCU-5). Imports fill the supply gap. Effective measures should be undertaken to increase domestic production of ELS cotton to meet rising demand and reduce imports to the barest minimum, he said. For 2006-07, Mr Jhunjhunwala, Mr Purusottamdas D. Patodia and Mr Sushilkant P. Shah were elected as President, Vice-President and additional Vice-President, respectively of EICA.
