No political vendetta, says Minister

The district committees have been directed to submit reports within 45 days and the apex committee within 60 days.

Thiruvananthapuram , July 17

The Kerala Government has formed a State Monitoring and Review Committee and 14 district-level committees to probe charges of misappropriation of funds in the State's cooperative sector. The inquiry will also cover irregularities in the State Cooperative Bank.

The panels, comprising officials of the Cooperative Department, will also inquire into charges of nepotism in the sector, the Minister for Cooperation, Mr G. Sudhakaran, said here on Monday.

He said that as many as 2,000 complaints on various issues such as corruption and financial irregularities in cooperative societies had been received by the department over the last two months. There had been complaints about irregularities involving amounts ranging from Rs 200 to 500 crore in the State Cooperative Bank, he added.

The complaints about the bank included sanctioning of loans to individuals and institutions in violation of norms. The district committees have been directed to submit their reports within 45 days and the apex committee within 60 days, the Minister said.

He made it clear that the inquiry was not intended to wreak revenge on political foes. This was in response to several complaints about the functioning of the societies and banks during the past five years.

SABARIMALA ROW

Mr Sudhakaran, who is also the Minister for Devaswom, said that the Travancore Devaswom Board had recommended a Crime Branch inquiry into the controversy regarding the entry of Kannada actor Jayamala into the sanctum sanctorum at Sabarimala. The Government does not want to interfere with the functions of the board, he added.
