Mining & Quarrying Government - Foreign Relations Bangladesh keen to develop mining sector with Indian help Badal Sanyal
Kolkata , July 17 The Bangladesh Government is keen on developing its mining sector with technical manpower and financial support from India. Petro Bangla, an official agency engaged in developing the mining sector in that country, has approached the Ranchi-based Indian Institute of Coal Management (IICM) to help it develop skilled managerial personnel so that it can be self-sufficient to a considerable extent. IICM, a wholly owned subsidiary of Coal India Ltd, has assured the visiting executives of Petro Bangla that the institute will prepare a special training programme for Bangladeshi personnel, and if they desire, the institute will organise such programmes in Dhaka. Petro Bangla is understood to have decided to minimise its dependence on China in the area of developing mining of coal and other minerals. It feels that it will be easier to source technical and financial support from India rather than China. Currently, the country imports technology from China. The development is likely to encourage even private investors to enter joint venture mining projects in Bangladesh. The Tatas have shown an interest in setting up an integrated steel-cum-power project in Bangladesh, which has run into problems.
