Thiruvananthapuram , July 18 True to predictions, the second monsoon `low' has turned out to be less intense than the predecessor, churning to become a well marked `low' at its best bringing parts of East and central India under its spell over the past four days. In contrast, the season's first `low' had progressed to become a deep depression and caused markedly heavier rains along North Peninsular, Central and West India, said Dr Akhilesh Gupta of the Department of Science and Technology. On Tuesday, the previous day's well marked low had weakened to a conventional `low' and lay over Jharkhand and adjoining south-east Uttar Pradesh. It is likely to move slowly towards west-northwest, according to a forecast by the National Centre for Medium Range Weather Forecasting (NCMRWF).
Heavy rains likely
Under its influence, fairly widespread rains with heavy to very heavy falls are likely over Vidarbha, Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh and adjoining Maharashtra. The rainfall activity over west Madhya Pradesh, East Rajasthan, Konkan, Goa (including Mumbai), Madhya Maharashtra and Gujarat is likely to increase over the next two to three days. According to Dr Gupta, models are now giving out varying views on the probability of a `mid-tropospheric cyclone' (MTC) getting organised over the Gujarat coast.
On Tuesday, the axis of the seasonal trough passed through Anupgarh, Churu, Agra, Kanpur, centre of the above low-pressure area and thence southeastwards. Under its influence, scattered to fairly widespread rains are likely over Northwest India, the NCMRWF said.
