Seeds States - Andhra Pradesh Rallis India to launch Bt-II cottonseed next year K.V. Kurmanath
Chittigadde (Rangareddy dist) , July 19 Rallis India, a Tata group company, is confident of launching Bt-II (Bollgard II) cottonseed next year. "The process is on. We are attempting to introduce Bt-II," Mr Vijay K. Bhatt, Zonal Manager, told Business Line. Mr Vijay was heading a Rallis team to this village near Vikarabad to explain to farmers the best practices in using pesticides. He said the company introduced two Bt seed varieties in the State this season. "We have sold 75,000 packets so far," he said. The safety awareness programme was organised in association with Crop Life India, the association of plant science companies. The programme was held in 36 locations across Andhra Pradesh, covering all the districts. He said the idea was to educate the farmers on new agrotech practices as also on new pesticides and safe and effective usage of the same for optimising the yield. Mr Vijay said the company had taken up a nationwide programme involving its sales team in all the 160 territories. Besides training 8,000 farmers, the safety message would be taken to 50,000 farmers during the season.
Stating that usage of pesticides was a must to get better yields, he said the company's focus on Andhra Pradesh for the safety awareness programme was due to large-scale consumption of pesticides in the State. "It consumes one-third of all the pesticides sold in the country," he said. He cited huge diversification and pest attacks as reasons for high sales volumes of pesticides.
