Outlook States - Andhra Pradesh `Develop software in Indian languages' Our Bureau
Hyderabad , July 30 Software in Indian languages and low cost hardware will help speed up computerisation process in the country, Mr F.C. Kohli, former Deputy Chairman of Tata Consultancy Services, has said. "Considerable work on Indian language software is being done at CDAC, IITs and many other academia and open software is available in five Indian languages. By the end of the year, 12-14 Indian languages will be covered. Once this happens, computerisation process will speed up," Mr Kohli said. Speaking at the convocation address at Indian Institute of Information Technology-Hyderabad (IIIT-H), on State of Computerisation in India, he said there is huge potential to push technology further by focussing on research and innovation. India today accounts for less than 2 per cent of the global IT and the whole world is open to India. Dwelling upon a whole range of issues, right from IT exports, literacy, school education, and computerisation, Dr Kohli said the challenge is to develop software in Indian languages that caters to the need of over 900 million people who do not communicate in English. The Chief Minister, Dr Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy, while complimenting the research initiatives undertaken by the IIIT-H, said that the e-Sagu project developed by the IIIT benefited over 6,000 farms and 200 fishponds, bringing savings. The 62-acre land that housed IIIT would be regularised, at a small fee of Rs 1.5 lakh, he said.
