Long queues were seen at various income tax (IT) offices in the city as taxpayers turned up in large numbers to file returns on the last day.

As per estimated department figures, IT offices in Mumbai collected around 70,000 returns (only salary) on Tuesday.

Almost all IT offices in the city worked well into the evening to dispense waiting taxpayers.

The department opened extra counters at the IT Office in Bandra-Kurla Complex where returns on salary are filed.

"The rush was much less this time as we accepted returns on Saturday and Sunday as well.

"We closed our counters at 7 p.m.," said Mr A.K. Mehrish, Commissioner - Income Tax.

The department is given a mammoth target of Rs 69,000 crore to be collected from Mumbai in this fiscal.

The extended last date for filing of income tax returns (above Rs 10 lakh) on business and professional income is October 31.
