`Alarming rise in bacterial percentage in Ganga waters'

The West Bengal Pollution Control Board (WBPCB) has struck upon a phenomenal increase in bacterial percentage in the Ganga waters primarily owing to indiscriminate dumping of municipal wastes.

"Bacteria-related problems in the Ganga have assumed alarming proportions in recent times due to indiscriminate dumping of wastes including solid wastes by the civic bodies - located along the river - other than the Kolkata Municipal Corporation," the WBPCB Chairman, Mr Sudip Banerjee, said at an interactive session organised by the Merchants' Chamber of Commerce here on Thursday.
According him, the WBPCB has already warned the said civic bodies of penal action unless corrective steps are taken immediately.
"We have repeatedly asked the municipalities along the river not to dump wastes in the Ganga," he said.
The civic bodies have also been advised on a proper location for alternative dumping of wastes, he added.
Electronic wastes
Expressing concern over the pollution caused by electronic wastes, Mr Banerjee said that the Central Pollution Control Board and the Union Environment Ministry were in the process of issuing necessary guidelines to the States to prevent such pollution.
