Chennai , Aug. 4

Water Investment Company Ltd, a joint venture promoted by the Tamil Nadu Government and IL&FS, hopes to complete a Rs 400-crore wastewater treatment project in Tirupur by the year-end.

Addressing Suminfra 2006, a conference organised by the Confederation of Indian Industry on infrastructure development through public-private-partnership, Mr Sameer Vyas, Director, Water Investment Company, said the project would enable the bleaching and dyeing units in the knitwear export hub to meet the environment norms, recycle and reuse the effluent water.

PPP success

He highlighted this as a success story of public-private partnership, where the State Government and IL&FS partnered to promote New Tiruppur Area Development Corporation Ltd (NTADCL).

Public sector investment of Rs 50 crore was the catalyst that attracted funds for the Rs 1,000-crore project. The project involves setting up a treatment plant and reverse osmosis facility to purify the water from the effluent for reuse. It will have a capacity of about 55 million litres a day.

Mr Vyas, who is also the Managing Director of NTADCL,, which implemented the Rs 1,000-crore water supply project for industrial units in Tirupur, said that a sanitation project covering 60 per cent of the population of Tirupur was nearing completion. This is a Rs 105-crore project that is to be completed by September. Also in the pipeline were an underground sewage system in Salem and Erode.

Another wastewater treatment project is also under consideration for the industries in Sriperumbudur, about 35 km west of Chennai. A special purpose vehicle — Chennai Industrial Water Utility Company Ltd — will set up a 20-million-litre a day sewage treatment facility to process the city's domestic sewage and supply clean water for industrial use.
