E-ticketing facility to be provided through kiosks

New Delhi , Aug. 4

Indian Railways and the State Bank of India (SBI) on Friday signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) for installation of automated teller machines (ATMs) at 681 railway stations across the country, including 298 small stations, where there are no ATMs at present.

The MoU would also enhance the e-ticketing reach, with SBI agreeing to provide ticketing facility through Internet ticketing kiosk at 383 major stations in association with the Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC).

SBI would pay an annual licence fee of about Rs 10.5 crore to the Railways. ATMs at 681 stations would be installed within 15 months of signing of this MoU. SBI would have a free hand to take connectivity from any service provider at its own cost.

The MoU was signed by Mr H.V. Sharma, Executive Director (Passenger Marketing), Railway Board, and Mr Syed Shahabuddin, Chief General Manager (IT), SBI, in the presence of the Union Railway Minister, Mr Lalu Prasad; the Union Finance Minister, Mr P. Chidambaram; the Deputy Chairman of Planning Commission, Mr Montek Singh Ahluwalia; the Chairman of the Railway Board, Mr J.P. Batra; and the SBI Chairman, Mr O.P. Bhatt.

The policy for installation of ATMs at railway stations was issued in 2001 and in five years' time around 150 ATMs were installed at major railway stations.
