Landslide in Araku valley

Our Bureau

Visakhapatnam, Aug. 4

There was a landslide at Kodipunjulavalasa village in the Araku valley in Visakhapatnam district on Thursday night, around 10 p.m , claiming several lives. Five bodies were recovered by Friday evening. Visakhapatnam and the other north-coastal districts experienced cyclonic rains on Wednesday and Thursday due to the depression in the Bay of Bengal, which crossed the coast at Puri in Orissa on Thursday. According to reports reaching here on Friday, the people in the village were caught unawares as the boulders hurtled down at 10 p.m or so, and there was no escape route as the village was encircled by a hill stream in spate. Twenty-six persons, injured in the incident are being treated at the community health centre at Araku and 25 more are yet to be traced.
