Increased by Rs 150; second hike in two months

New Delhi , Aug. 4

Jet Airways, Air Sahara and Indian announced on Friday that the fuel surcharge for domestic travel in both business and economy class was being revised upwards by Rs 150.

The increased fuel surcharge comes into effect from August 8. A passenger would now have to pay a fuel surcharge of Rs 650 on all tickets purchased within and outside the country.

This is the second successive month that the domestic airline industry has hiked the fuel surcharge. In July, it announced that the fuel surcharge being levied on domestic air travel was being increased from Rs 300 to Rs 500.

From Aug 8

The surcharge, however, will not be applicable on sale of tickets made on or before August 7, as per the ticketed itinerary. However, the surcharge will be applicable if tickets are presented for any voluntary change on or after August 8.

Jet Airways has also increased to $14 the surcharge on tickets issued abroad for travel within India while Indian has increased the surcharge to $14.50 for tickets purchased abroad or against dollar tariff within the country.

The two low-cost airlines — Spice Jet and Air Deccan — however, did not announce a hike in fuel surcharge on Friday. "A decision is expected tomorrow," said an Air Deccan spokesperson.

Spiralling prices

Similarly, a spokesperson of SpiceJet said that the airline was "contemplating but had not decided on the date for levy" of an additional fuel surcharge. As and when a decision is taken the airline would also look at increasing the fuel surcharge by Rs 150, the spokesman added.

The industry has said that the increase in surcharge has been necessitated due to the continuing escalation in the prices of aviation turbine fuel (ATF) that constitutes 30-35 per cent of operating cost of domestic airlines.

The average cost of ATF has shot up from about Rs 34,100 during August last year to touch Rs 42,650 per kilolitre in June this year and peaked at Rs 44,700 this month.
