Hyderabad , Aug. 6

In a bid to prevent crop loss on account of frequent floods and heavy rains in the coastal region of the State on a permanent basis, the Andhra Pradesh Government plans to modernise Godavari delta drains involving an outlay of around Rs 3,000 crore, the Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister, Dr Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy, said.

He announced this here on Sunday addressing the media after returning from his aerial survey of the rain-affected areas of the coastal region.

The Chief Minister reviewed the flood situation, damage and relief measures with the district officials and people's representatives.

Stating that the officials and public representatives have raised the issue of delta drains and canals at the review meeting, Dr Reddy said a thorough study would be taken up towards the modernisation of delta drains, which would take around a year.

He said the then Congress Government had spent Rs 1,300 crore of World Bank funds during 1990 for drains under the Cyclone Emergency Reconstruction Project.

Crop damage

Meanwhile, the Minister for Agriculture, Mr N. Raghuveera Reddy, said the heavy rains in the last three days have damaged crops in an area of 2.5 lakh acres.

According to him, preliminary reports from the districts indicated that paddy crops, nurseries and horticulture crops suffered major damage. The horticulture alone was reportedly damaged in around 8,000 acres, which includes damage to at least 6,500 acres of banana cultivation.

The Minister said several teams were currently assessing the crop damage in the flood-affected districts wherein the Government plans to distribute saplings at 75 per cent subsidy to the farmers who lost their horticultural crops.

Further, the Government also plans to supply seeds to growers at a subsidy of up to Rs 15,000 per hectare, he said.
