Karnataka seeks Central aid for floods

Excess rainfall causes extensive crop damage

The Karnataka Government on Tuesday sought a Central assistance of Rs 906.72 crore to undertake restoration works in several districts affected by heavy floods following the monsoon rains.
An all-party delegation led by the Chief Minister, Mr H.D. Kumaraswamy, on Tuesday submitted a memorandum to the Prime Minister, Dr Manmohan Singh, in Delhi.
Heavy damage
According to a preliminary assessment, excess rainfall had caused extensive crop damage, affected infrastructure, roads and caused loss to property and lives in marooned villages.
The coastal districts of Udupi, Uttara Kannada, Dakshina Kannada and Malnad districts of Chikmagalur, Hassan, Shimoga and Kodagu had suffered damage to the extent of Rs 125.8 crore, the memorandum said.
Also, excess rainfall in Maharashtra and heavy inflow from that State resulted in floods in Belgaum, Bagalkot, Bijapur, Raichur and Gulbarga last month. The Almatti Dam gates had to be opened fully to accommodate the release of water from Maharashtra, the memorandum said.
Crops on 80,000 hectares had been damaged while loss of infrastructure had been put at Rs 600 crore
The delegation, comprising the leaders of the ruling coalition of Janata Dal (S) and the Bharatiya Janata Party and the Opposition parties including the Congress (I) also pointed out that the State Government had released Rs 58 crore to take up emergency rescue and relief operations.
