Sugar refinery in Kakinada SEZ planned

Our Bureau

Kakinada , Aug.10

A sugar refinery is proposed to be set up in the port-based special economic zone (SEZ) coming up here at a cost of over Rs 300 crore.

The refinery is planned as a joint venture between EID Parry (India) Ltd of the Murugappa group and Cargill International Ltd. Sugar is to be imported from Brazil, refined in the unit and exported. The unit is expected to be commissioned by December 2007. According to sources, the refinery is likely to earn Rs 150 crore in foreign exchange per annum.

A captive power plant is also planned for the proposed sugar refinery. It will be one of the major units coming up in the SEZ.

LAND ACQUISITION

The district administration of East Godavari has expedited the process of land acquisition for the establishment of the SEZ and also the oil refinery by the Oil and Natural Gas Corporation Ltd (ONGC). The process is expected to be completed by September.

The State Government, it is learnt, is keen on completing the process of land acquisition as soon as possible and handing over the land to the ONGC for setting up the refinery and the SEZ at a cost of Rs 6,000 crore.

However, it is reported that the Union Ministry of Petroleum has asked the ONGC to have a second look at the refinery proposal and examine its economic feasibility.
