Automated peeling machine — A solution to sago, starch-making sector

L.N. Revathy

Mr Dhandayuthapani's invention would bring in the much-needed solution to the problems faced by the sago manufacturing units in the unorganised, small-scale sector

Coimbatore , Aug. 11

An automated peeling machine — Tapioca Abrasive Peeler — developed by an engineering student has caught the attention of the research community and sago manufacturers.

The student, Mr Dhandayuthapani, of the Sathyamangalam-based Bannari Amman Institute of Technology, through his innovation, has found a solution to the problems faced by the sago and starch-manufacturing units in the unorganised, small-scale sector.

Cost Effective

`The Tapioca Abrasive Peeler' is claimed to increase peeling productivity by 33 per cent and cut the cost of peeling by 700 per cent.

This invention is stated to be the first-ever automated peeling machine.

Peeling Cost

Trial production results showed that 600 bags of the tuber could be peeled in a shift of 8 hours, with just one person operating the machine vis-à-vis 450 bags in 8 hours involving 40 workers in the manual process.

The wastage was also reduced to 0.123 gms/kg of tapioca against 150 gm/kg in the conventional method.

The cost of peeling dipped to Rs 1.01 a bag against the earlier level of Rs 8/bag.
