Mittal Steel firm on setting up Jharkhand, Orissa plants

Kolkata , Aug. 11

Mittal Steel has reiterated its commitment to set up integrated steel plants in both Jharkhand and Orissa.

However, the first of the two plants will come up in that State where progress is made with regard to acquisition of land and mines, Mr Sanak Mishra, CEO of Mittal Steel's Indian operations, told newspersons on the sidelines of the 60th annual general meeting of The Indian Institute of Metals here on Friday.

Mr Mishra said Mittal Steel was serious about both the proposed projects in Jharkhand and Orissa. For the Jharkhand project, the group would require 10,000 acres of land. From the six sites that were identified earlier, Mittal Steel had zeroed in on three sites - Saraikela, Guluda and Torpara - where the project would be set up. A final decision in this regard would be taken by the middle of next month.

"We are waiting for the Jharkhand Government's rehabilitation policy which will facilitate acquisition of land," he said, adding that talks were under way with the Jharkhand Government for acquisition of mines as well.

According to him, the process of appointing a consultant for the Orissa project was on even as 4-5 sites had been shortlisted for the setting up of the proposed project.
