Expert group on farmers' indebtedness

The Finance Minister, Mr P. Chidambaram, on Friday announced in the Lok Sabha the setting up of a four-member expert group to look into the problem of farmers' indebtedness.

The group comprises Prof R. Radhakrishna of the Indira Gandhi Institute of Development Research, Mumbai, Mr P.V. Shenoy, former agriculture secretary, Mr Y.S.P. Thorat, Managing Director, Nabard and Mr Kanta Kumar, former Chairman and Managing Director of Syndicate Bank.

Mr Chidambaram said the Government was aware of the problem and promised more steps after receiving the report of the expert group. On farm credit, Mr Chidambaram expressed confidence that the Government would, this year, "far exceed" the farm credit target of Rs 1,75,000 crore for 2006-07.
