Brakes India plans foundry unit in Oman

M. Ramesh

Chennai , Aug. 15

Brakes India Ltd is considering putting up a foundry unit in Oman. While confirming this to Business Line, the company's Joint Managing Director, Mr S Viji, said that the proposal was in "preliminary stages." He said that it was just an idea and needed to be discussed with the company's foreign partner, TRW.

He noted that there were many advantages of locating a plant in West Asia. For instance, the plant would be closer to customers in Europe and the US than a plant in India. Secondly, power costs in the region would be much lower.

Asked why Oman was being considered among the many countries in the region, Mr Viji said that Oman was a politically stable country. Besides, it had a very good "deep draft port," which would make exporting out of the country easier.

Brakes India, one of the companies of the TVS group, has two divisions— brakes and foundry products. The turnover of the brakes division is of the order of Rs 500 crore. The division is a leading supplier of brakes systems to global OEMs operating in India. Sales of the foundry division is about Rs 200 crore. The division has an installed capacity of 47,000 tonnes a year of castings.
