Roadways Truck rentals on trunk routes fall Our Bureau
Bangalore , Aug. 16 Truck rentals on trunk routes have dropped by four to five per cent in the last four weeks. The freight rentals on a round trip between key trunk routes such as Delhi and Guwahati fell to Rs 88,200 from Rs 93,000, while it slipped to Rs 75,600 from Rs 79,500 on the Delhi-Chennai route. The fall comes after five quarters of soaring rates (April 2005 to June 2006) and has been attributed to unchecked overloading by increased fleet of heavy commercial vehicles. The coming festival months are expected to improve the freight rate as the industry anticipates additional 25 - 30 per cent cargo due to peak consumer spending on white goods, electronic items, garments and packaged food items. However, if the overloading phenomenon is not eliminated, a stable and a viable freight pricing is not possible in the long run, according to the Indian Foundation of Transport Research and Training (IFTRT). In a study, IFTTRT said the resurgence of overloading, despite its reduction following the 2005 Supreme Court order banning it, has vitiated the truckers' economy.
