Pulses States - Tamil Nadu Nafed commences pulses sale in TN Our Bureau
Chennai , Aug 16 The National Agricultural Cooperative Marketing Federation (Nafed) has commenced sales of imported pulses in Tamil Nadu as an intervention measure to control prices. According to official sources, urad (black matpe) imported from Myanmar is seeing brisk offtake by millers and brokers. Today's market rate was Rs 3,175 a quintal. Imports have helped rein in prices - Nafed estimates that without the imported consignments on hand prices would have touched Rs 3,400.
Crop Arrivals
The recent rains in Maharashtra are expected to hit the arrivals of new crops in September and prices have been buoyant. Most of the urad would be sold in Tamil Nadu, a major consumption centre. According to a NAFED release, it is importing over 50,000 tonnes of pulses and the first consignment of 21 containers of urad has arrived in Chennai Port. These could reach the market in a couple of days. A break-bulk consignment of 15,000 tonnes is expected later in August. Another consignment of 120 containers is also expected this month.
